The West Nile Virus
West Nile is carried by mosquitoes who picked up the virus from birds. The mosquito can then transfer it other birds, and when the number of affected birds and mosquito raises the chance of the virus spreading to humans and animals raises. Colorado has seen cases of the West Nile virus since 2002. Unfortunately, studies show that the virus is here to stay.
People infected with the West Nile Virus usually experience fever and flu-like symptoms. Luckily, only 1 in 5 people infected with the virus will experience symptoms, and people who experience the illness recover quickly. Although rare, some people develop a serious sickness from the virus that affects the central nervous system. 1 in 10 people who develop the serious illness will die, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention
The West Nile Virus in dogs and cats is shown to not affect them seriously. They have a strong antibody against the virus. For horses, their immune system is less tolerable. An infected horse might show symptoms of change in their personality, hyperresponsiveness to sound or touch, muscle tremors or twitching, stumbling and falling, or circling. If not treated, the illness can be fatal to the horse.
If your horse is showing any of the above symptoms you should have them checked by a vet immediately.
